Building a Client Community

Russell Pearson encouraged guests to take control of their client pool when speaking at the MBA’s networking breakfast.

Instead of chasing clients, Russell said businesses should create a community to draw on when needed, and focus on the outcomes they can achieve for clients, rather than the ins and outs of how to reach them.

“The best thing about creating a community is that you steer it.”

“The best thing about creating a community is that you steer it,” Russell said. “It’s now more about how can we bring people to us until we are ready and until they are ready to work together.

“You don’t even have to talk about the vehicle. This person on danger island just wants to get to safety island. If you have a plane, that’s cool. But them actually getting there is cooler.”

Guests at this month’s MBA networking event also heard from Lucas Lastman of Whistle Design, our Monash Business of the Year. Whistle Design is a product design company that has tackled everything from power tools and point of sale tablets to an injury prevention platform for North Melbourne Football Club. The company is now collaborating on instant freezing technology and, over the next five years, hopes to break into the defense industry.

“It’s a big industry that the government is putting a lot of money into,” Lucas said. “When people think of defense they think of weapons but there is so much more to it: soldier equipment, safety, medical production. If we can bring our innovation into it, some of that will go out to local manufacturing. That’s a good goal to have, I think.”

Lucas welcomed the first round of nominees for the 2023 Monash Business Awards, presenting them their certificates. The nominees (pictured below, clockwise from left) were The Xine, Bizcom Legal, Kumon Glen Waverley and Reptile Encounters.

Mitchell Zadow of Sharrock Pitman Legal praised this month’s speakers and organisers.

“It’s interesting to hear new ways to think about and approach the client engagement process, especially in these new times we’re in,” Mitchell said. “It’s also a great opportunity to meet and connect with other businesses in the local Monash area.”
